Deep Blue Heart
Every teaspoon of the ocean is alive
Every drop contains the story of a miracle planet
Deep Blue Heart is inspired by the life and teachings of Sylvia Earle (b. 1935), a scientist, explorer and tireless advocate for the world's oceans. The lyrics piece together words and phrases from lectures and interviews she has given over the years. In writing this piece, I spent many hours listening to Sylvia Earle speak with equal parts wonder and concern for life beneath the ocean's surface, and her words changed the way I think about the planet and value ocean life. I hope that Deep Blue Heart in turn inspires singers and audiences to learn more about our oceans and feel wonder at the miracle of life that they sustain.
